I didn’t spend too long in the Journal newsroom, but I was fortunate enough to have a desk a row away from Bill Dyroff, where I could hear him writing his fishing column every week. Just listening to the man was a delight — he knew exactly what he wanted to know, and anything else wasn’t worth knowing.

My favorite anecdote: One week, he was talking to a contact at one of the state parks, and the topic of some new TV show arose. He was interested in it, for sure, but you could tell he couldn’t quite wrap his brain around the concept of more channels than the major networks. Finally, in frustration, he barked into the phone, “What the hell is a UPN?”

Rest in peace, Mr. Bill.

I read 9 Chickweed Lane every day but Sunday, mostly because it’s in the paper (which YES I STILL GET PHYSICALLY DELIVERED REMEMBER I AM OLD) and partly because I can’t help but smirk at what I call “the horniest comic in print.” Seriously, everybody in this strip is full of hormones and innuendo. The reason for this soggy purple dress, in fact, is because the vet was on a date before she got called away to check on the cow and she wanted to impress the dude (who, by the way, she fired as an assistant so there wouldn’t be a conflict when he asked her out, and yes, he was fine with that because he’s horny too).

But maybe you just look at the pictures. And maybe you had the same reaction as I did: “Is that a nipple?”

I miss the Albuquerque Sports Stadium.

It is nonsensical to speak such words aloud, and I’m in the minority on this. Not miss it in the sense that I want it back, or that I prefer it to Isotopes Park. That’s not what I’m saying.

Absolutely the most thoroughly thought-out replication of a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster using Earth ingredients that I have ever seen. Now I don’t have to do it. (All this time I’d been trying to figure out how to incorporate Goldschlager and blue curacao without it being totally disgusting, and never thought of just using the edible gold sprinkles from the cake-decorating section of the hobby store.)

And, like the 2012-13 Lobos, Whisenant’s team would exit the tournament after a gut-punch defeat in that first game. The final score in Tempe, Ariz.: Cal State-Fullerton 90, New Mexico 85.
