Buried by the news of some undead sock-hopper finally resting in peace is the fact that the NCAA’s all-time winningest coach stepped down today.
Pat Summitt probably did more for equality in college sports (to say nothing of women’s basketball) than any other single person. She was coaching at Tennessee before their team was officially a thing. When Title IX forced people to recognize women’s sports, she was immediately successful. The Lady Vols are the only team that’s been to every NCAA Tournament, they’ve never been seeded lower than fifth, and they won eight titles under Summitt’s reign.
Unfortunately, early-onset dementia isn’t something you can burn away with one of those laser-intense stares of hers.
Thanks for everything, coach. Not just for me, but for my daughter, who will get to grow up seeing strong women accomplish amazing feats and realize she can too.
